ORLANDO, FL – Thursday, October 27, 2022 – Paris is always a good idea, especially when it involves getting swept up in a tale of love, obsession, lust, betrayal, heartbreak, art and the can-can all within the Bohemian walls of the Moulin Rouge cabaret.

Next February marks the return of Artistic Director Jorden Morris’ wildly popular Moulin Rouge® The Ballet where Morris’ big vision of 19th Century Paris culture comes to life through his beautifully choreographed storytelling. Morris’ blend of exquisite ballet, period costumes and set designs, enhanced by the artistry of lighting is completed by a fabulous French music score that carries the audience through Toulouse-Lautrec’s thirsty relationships with seductive courtesans and the struggles of stagestruck launderette Nathalie and Mathieu, the aspiring, young painter with whom she falls in love.

Guest artist Christian Clark joins the Orlando Ballet Company dancers, returning to dance the role of dreamy Mathieu, which he performed here in 2020 and previously in Morris’ 2013 film adaptation of Paris’ most iconic nightclub. Co-founder of Atlanta’s Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre, Clark shares the stage with the Orlando Ballet dance company where together they deliver elegance and romance.

Fans will also appreciate the return of Guest Conductor Julian Pellicano who will conduct live music performed by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. The audience will also be treated to the authenticity of the 150 costumes designed by Anne Armit and Shannon Lovelace who stayed true to history in excruciating detail, even using bone corsets in the dancers’ garb along with Argentine fabric for dresses worn while they perform the tango. The authenticity of Paris is clear in the sets designed by Andrew Beck and enhanced by the precise Parisian lighting designs created by Pierre Lavoie and Joseph Walls

When first performed in Orlando at the height of pandemic protocols in 2020, Morris abbreviated his original production. Despite those challenges, including audience capacity reduced to only 25 percent, Moulin Rouge® The Ballet is one of Orlando Ballet’s most popular productions in the company’s near 50-year history.

This season, the audience will be treated to the full version which includes the return of 40 minutes of original, spectacular dance including solos, several large corps performances and even several performances of the ever-sensual tango — c’est magnifique.

“The Moulin Rouge has always inspired curiosity and imagination about Toulouse-Lautrec, the windmill, and all that is suspected to have taken place inside the cabaret. My intent is to present an authentic Parisian experience while telling a memorable story of love and heartbreak. This is a very special ballet,” Morris said.

Morris was originally commissioned by Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company in 2009 to create Moulin Rouge® The Ballet in honor of the company’s 70th anniversary celebration. Creating this vivid sojourn through the nightclub required full and final approval by the original Moulin Rouge in Paris. Since then, it has been performed around the world and remains the only licensed dance production in existence under Morris’ direction.

Clark, an Atlanta native, began dancing as a child. His 16-year career in ballet has included performing as principal artist with Atlanta Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet and numerous other professional dance companies around the country. He has performed a range of leading roles in some of the world’s greatest ballets including Swan Lake, Giselle, Romeo and Juliette, and Dracula. Clark has danced works by world-renowned choreographers including Twyla Tharp, Ohad Naharin, Alexander Ekman, Liam Scarlett, and Stanton Welch to name a few.
