Workshops, Masterclasses & Additional Programming

Orlando Ballet and Orlando Ballet School have a series of auditions, workshops, and masterclasses throughout the year. Below is information regarding programming, dates, times and registration. Pre-Season Classes

August 7-17, 2023

Pre-Season Classes are available on certain dates between August 7-17 and allow for additional training, as well as an introduction to classwork prior to the start of the Orlando Ballet school year.

Orlando Ballet School students registered for level’s 1 and up during the 22-23 school year or non-OBS students ages 8+ are eligible to enroll.

Non-OBS students must be age 12+ with one year of pointe experience to participate in pointe work and is subject to instructor approval. All Non-OBS students are subject to placement in appropriate class level per instructor discretion based on the American Ballet Theatre curriculum.

Master Class with Francie Huber

About Francie Huber:
Francie Huber is from Kansas City, Missouri. She earned a B.F.A. from The Juilliard School in New York City. A principal dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Ms. Huber created many roles including the solo in Cascade, “the polka” in “Company B”, as well as the lead role in the internationally acclaimed Piazzolla Caldera. Her contribution to this work was featured in the 1999 Academy Award nominated documentary film, Dancemaker.
Ms. Huber was also featured in several television productions including the Dance in America series’ Emmy Award winning Speaking In Tongues, the Emmy nominated The Wrecker’s Ball, the Dannmarks Radio production of Spindrift And Syzygy, and the 1992 Kennedy Center Honors and in the documentary film, “Callings” by John Altman. She was awarded a Bessie (New York Dance and Performance Award) for sustained achievement in dancing for her work with Mr. Taylor. Ms. Huber also performed with other companies including Twyla Tharp Dance as well as performed her own solo works. In addition to her performing career, she has served as director of the Taylor 2 Dance Company, the second company of Paul Taylor and continues to stage Mr. Taylor’s works on professional companies and universities.
Ms. Huber is a Fulbright Scholar. She received a Post-Doctoral, lecture and research grant, which led her to Amman, Jordan where she was the Guest Artist at the Queen Noor Al Hussein Performing Arts Center. She was also the Dance Artist in Residence at the Carlsen Center in Kansas City for several years where she worked on the advancement of state and national standards for dance education and teacher training. Ms. Huber continues to teach master classes and workshops at universities, professional companies and private studios around the world and her choreography can be seen on many regional companies and schools. She has served on faculty at The Taylor School, New World School of the Arts, and currently lives in Southwest Florida where she enjoys teaching at Florida Gulf Coast University.
Audition Workshop

November 5, 2023 | Ages 9+

Students will learn audition tips and tricks and even receive feedback after a mock audition class from Orlando Ballet company members Anamarie McGinn and Israel Zavaleta Escobedo. The goal of this workshop is for students to receive a clear understanding of audition etiquette and expectations.

Students will receive a headshot and arabesque photography session by a professional videographer.

Choreographer’s Workshop

January 3-5, 2024 | Ages 11+ or OBS level’s 3+

Three days immersed in CHOREOGRAPHY and PERFORMANCE.

This one-of-a-kind workshop gives dancers the opportunity to explore ideas, create new choreography and build a show. Dancers perform choreography from other participants and create choreography for other participants.

All aspects of producing a show will be covered including:

  • developing choreography and a concept
  • site-specific work
  • lighting
  • music
  • tech rehearsal

Together, participants will create a performance open to the public.

No prepared material is required.

Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Workshop

The Sleeping Beauty Varition Workshop

February 17-18, 2024 | Ages 11+

*OBS faculty will determine eligibility to participate en pointe.

Students will have the opportunity to learn from OBS Faculty various variations from the ballet The Sleeping Beauty with daily technique class and conditioning. Includes one complimentary ticket to Orlando Ballet’s production of The Sleeping Beauty at the Dr. Phillip’s Center for the Performing Arts.

VARIATION EXPO

March 30-May 4, 2024 | Students ages 11+

*OBS faculty will determine eligibility to participate en pointe.

This program will allow participating students to perform a classical variation for a panel of ballet professionals from OB and an audience of family and friends on Saturday, May 4, 2024 in the HOBC Theatre. All students will receive a written evaluation of their performance from the panel.

Several variations will be selected by the faculty to be taught and worked on during scheduled coaching sessions during weekends in January leading up to the event. The variation coaches will then select which variation participating students will perform. Separate coaching will be given by Orlando Ballet Company members and Orlando Ballet School Faculty.

Performance: May 4, 2024

Costuming:

Costuming for girls is the choice of leotard along with a matching skirt or practice tutu (classical or romantic) and for boys’ tights and t-shirt in appropriate colors.

Costuming should be simple, and no new purchases are necessary. Costuming is the student/parent’s responsibility and must be approved by OBS staff.

Tentative coaching & performance schedule (subject to change):

  • Begins Saturday, March 30th, 2024
  • Rehearsals to follow on Saturday afternoons until May 4th. Exact times and details to follow.
