Summer Intensives are gearing up to start at many ballet schools and companies, including here at Orlando Ballet! Students who attend a summer intensive have such amazing opportunities to learn from new teachers, perform, learn new repertoire, and be seen by their dream company for the future! We sat down with OBS Director Phillip Broomhead about why summer intensives are important for students and the best way to prepare for them!

- Why do you think a summer intensive is important?
It’s very important that we continue to dance during the summer firstly because the break is very long and we need to keep our bodies working in order to refine, reinforce and strengthen our technique, grounding, and artistry. It is very difficult to regain all aspects of dance after prolonged breaks albeit from vacations or injury.
- Would you recommend trying to attend a summer intensive of a company you would like to be in eventually?
Yes, most artistic directors look for future dancers in summer intensives for their pre-professional divisions such as Second companies and trainee programs. On occasion, I have witnessed students being taken straight into companies from the summer intensive.
- What preparations do you recommend before your summer intensive starts?
Come to the intensive knowing that you are going to be challenged mentally and physically. Make sure that you are in dance shape. Our intensive is 100% full out from day one. Be open to correction and to new ways of thinking about dance and your technique and artistry. Make sure you have all uniform requirements and some extras!!
- What is special about the OBS Summer Intensive?
To start out with, we have a world-class faculty. Read their bios and how they fit into the history of the dance world. Intensive days that are designed to challenge you every day with cross-training, dances of different genres, and repertoire from well-known ballets. The faculty is passionate and driven in intent and specialize in helping students become proficient in their dance skills as well as become well-rounded individuals capable of taking on the challenges of not only dance careers but any career paths that they choose. Building confidence and work ethic that will carry them throughout their lives…..not to mention making lifelong friends.
- Anything else for students to know? Advice? Tips? Etc.
While you are here learn and experience our brand of teaching, make sure that you stay yourself. One of the greatest thrills is to see individual personalities come through the love of dance. That is why we are drawn to watch a particular dancer throughout their careers. Not only that they can do a thousand turns or turn themselves inside out but because of the way they interpret the art of dance and make it their own.
