ORLANDO BALLET ENTERTAINS, EDUCATES, AND ENRICHES THROUGH THE HIGHEST QUALITY OF DANCE.
Orlando Ballet unveils its 2016-17 season along with a variety of special events.
Coming off the heels of one of the most successful seasons in recent history, the Orlando Ballet keeps the excitement alive by announcing its 2016-17 season today. The season includes three brand new performances to the lineup kicking off with Dracula, directed and choreographed by Michael Pink, followed by the time honored holiday tradition of The Nutcracker, then Masterworks with choreography by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins and Twyla Tharp. The season will wrap up with A Cinderella Story, a unique take on the age-old story with electric choreography by Val Caniparoli and music by Richard Rodgers – composer for hit musicals such as The Sound of Music, Carousel, The King and I, and South Pacific.
In addition to the four full-length performances, this season the Ballet will offer a variety of special events, highlighted by A Tribute to Harriett, a one-night only production and gala at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. A Tribute to Harriett will feature music from Harriett’s favorite Broadway musicals and will be an evening you don’t want to miss. Additional special events include three Uncorked at the Abbey evenings and a Nutcracker Tea. Season subscribers will have exclusive access to tickets and be the first to know about the dates and details of each event.
“This season will be like nothing Ballet patrons have seen in the past,” said Robert Hill who is in his seventh season as Artistic Director for the Orlando Ballet. Hill continued, “We’re upping the ante in 2016-17 and can’t wait for the opportunity to bring so many new features to the stage.”
Michael Pink’s internationally renowned Dracula combines the fascinating horror of Bram Stoker’s 1897 horror classic with expressive, dramatic choreography, a few well-placed theatrical effects, a colorful score by Philip Feeney, intriguingly dimensional sets, and character-defining costumes. A breathtaking story of passion, seduction, transformation and sacrifice, Dracula will be this Halloween’s most thrilling adventure.
The enchanting favorite returns by popular demand as a season option. A Christmas Eve gift of a toy nutcracker from her godfather transports Clara on a magical journey to a world of fantasy and fun complete with the Mouse King, Sugar Plum Fairy, and Mother Ginger.
Don’t miss this collection of works from the masters of music and dance showcasing our dancers’ artistry and athleticism and powerful live music. Masterworks includes Serenade, with choreography by George Balanchine and music by Tchaikovsky; Fancy Free, with choreography by Jerome Robbins and music by Leonard Bernstein; and the extremely popular Sinatra Suite, with choreography by Twyla Tharp and music by Frank Sinatra.
Remember when families gathered around the television set on a Saturday night? That era, the 1950’s, is the setting for Val Caniparoli’s A Cinderella Story, a retro retelling of everybody’s favorite fairy tale. Experience a unique take on the old-age story complete with vintage couture-inspired costumes, electric choreography melded with Richard Rodgers’ music, all arranged for a live jazz orchestra by legendary Winnipeg bandleader Ron Paley.
